Watch the movie first, then check out Roger Ebert's review below. I just stumbled upon this film, having never heard of it, and I was delighted with it. It's not as phenomenal as the Matrix series, but it is quite good. It also deals with the concept of a "matrix", an artificial world constructed in our minds that we think is absolutely real. And the manipulators are very much the sociopathic type, with the usual lack of empathy.

Ebert's review.

One of my favorite. The William Hurt character is exceptional as inspector Frank Bumstead. Representing the practical man who believes in what he sees.

Kiefer Sutherland character is just as good with Dr. Daniel P. Schreber. He comes to grip with the inevitable and does the only thing possible.

The sociopathic element is well portrayed as the Strangers. Justifying their means by the need of their own survival.

Tons of elements reflecting the truth of today.

A tribute to our imagination or a warning from our subconscious?

Probably both...

First there was darkness. Then came the strangers. They were a race as old as time itself. They had mastered the ultimate technology. The ability to alter physical reality by will alone. They called this ability "Tuning". But they were dying. Their civilization was in decline, and so they abandoned their world seeking a cure for their own mortality. Their endless journey brought them to a small, blue world in the farthest corner of the galaxy. Our world. Here they thought they had finally found what they had been searching for.

Dr. Schreber
