I feel the same way about swearing on this board as I do about swearing in general.
1. Freedom of speech means everyone has the right to choose the words that come out of their mouths. I support freedom of speech for all.
2. Words can be selected that are beautiful and inspiring, or ugly and hurtful. Swearing typically serves the latter purpose (but not always).
3. Ideally, I am solely responsible for choosing the words that come out of my mouth, and you are solely responsible for the words that come out of your mouth.
4. We do not live in an ideal world. Deception and manipulation are common, and the words we select are often influenced by that deception and manipulation.
5. Words produce consequences, which in turn creates a feedback loop. Past consequences will therefore also influence our choice of words.
6. My conclusion is that the result is one of awesome complexity and responsibility. I personally will strive to avoid using words that are ugly and hurtful. Each of you has a similar decision to make, and like me, you are free to decide as you wish, in real time. But do not ignore the consequences of every decision you make, and be aware that those consequences are not always as predictable or as insignificant as you might imagine.
