Post Megalithic architecture
There was once a technology for building megalithic structures on this planet that was apparently lost after some kind of planetary catastrophe caused sufficient shock to tear some of the massive structures apart. The probable cause was a collision with an extraterrestrial mass like a comet or asteroid. Global sea level rose dramatically, maybe 140 feet above normal, due to the very rapid melting of the existing ice sheets from the force of impact. Normal climate patterns were also affected in adverse ways. It was almost like a planetary reboot, and it's estimated to have occurred around 13,000 years ago. The loss of life on land below 140 feet above sea level was probably dramatic.

Some of the evidence for this is discussed in the video below.

Graham Hancock also writes about the catastrophe that befell the Earth.

Quote:
Across this huge “fingerprint” spanning North America, Central America, parts of South America, most of Europe and parts of the Middle East as well, the tell-tale traces of multiple impacts by the fragments of a giant comet have been found. Some of these fragments, were TWO KILOMETRES or more in diameter and they hit the earth like a blast from a cosmic scatter-gun around 12,800 years ago. This was near the end of the last Ice Age, from which our world had been emerging into a pleasant warming phase, but the impacts set in train a kind of "nuclear winter" and plunged the planet back into a period of deep cold and darkness that lasted until around 11,500 years ago. It is this period of extreme cold that is referred to as the Younger Dryas (after a characteristic Alpine tundra wildflower, Dryas octopetala) but it is only now, with conclusive evidence of the comet impact, that we can be sure what caused it. -- source

Can you imagine how an advanced civilization could be lost due to 1000+ years of nuclear winter which begins with massive explosions quickly followed by an unbelievable sea level rise? Atlantis is said to have disappeared beneath the ocean in 24 hours.

Scientific America is on board with this catastrophe theory.

Quote:
Roughly 12,900 years ago, massive global cooling kicked in abruptly, along with the end of the line for some 35 different mammal species, including the mammoth, as well as the so-called Clovis culture of prehistoric North Americans. Various theories have been proposed for the die-off, ranging from abrupt climate change to overhunting once humans were let loose on the wilds of North America. But now nanodiamonds found in the sediments from this time period point to an alternative: a massive explosion or explosions by a fragmentary comet, similar to but even larger than the Tunguska event of 1908 in Siberia. -- source

Prior to this disaster, megalithic architecture of a type we cannot reproduce was practiced in numerous locations across the planet. After the catastrophe, this building style was no longer practiced. That is the suggestion made by a growing body of "rogue" archaeologists.

"It appears Gobekli Tepe was, among other things, an observatory for monitoring the night sky," Sweatman told the Press Association.

"One of its pillars seems to have served as a memorial to this devastating event – probably the worst day in history since the end of the Ice Age."

To try to figure out whether that comet strike actually happened or not, the researchers used computer models to match the patterns of the stars detailed on the Vulture Stone to a specific date - and they found evidence that the event in question would have occurred about 10,950 BCE, give or take 250 years. -- source

Here is unexpected confirmation that the comet strike Graham Hancock speaks of quite likely did take place. Even the dates match.
