Post Proxy Servers
Hi all..

Posts addressing some the issue's regarding polling and forum administration are getting lost with all the "ripping each other another one" going on..

Chico, You posted somewhere (I can never find anything) regarding sock puppets making polls irrelevant..

Does anyone think it would be a solution to not allow members with proxy servers to join the forum?? Or would it be better to have administrators list the members with proxy servers on the forum? Or does it not matter?

I don't know, I'm not technical...any ideas people?

Peace,
Lee

Post Re: Proxy Servers
I've seen this discussed on other forums.

Common problem from my understanding.

Simple solution.....don't let them join.

You are not allowed to connect using Proxy-Servers, as this is mostly used to make Fake-Multiple-Accounts by changing / hiding the IP-Adresss through Proxies. Members detected to use Proxy-Servers/IPs repeatedly, will get their Account suspended.

Thank you, Lee. I saw the need to bring this up as a separate thread, but I was hoping another member would do it first. I'm pleased that you did.

In real elections, each voter must be registered, and registration involves showing a valid ID to verify your identity. This helps prevent an individual from casting multiple votes. "One man, one vote" is required for a democratic vote where all voters have equal say.

At UP, registration is open to anyone and is anonymous. No background checks are currently done. We have what could be considered an "honor system" in place. An individual can register multiple times with multiple identities, as GW has demonstrated, easily circumventing the honor system. This would normally be of little importance, except in the case where members decide important issues with polls, which is exactly the case here at United People.

So, how do we guarantee that an individual can only cast one vote in any one poll?

Not so simple. Not all proxy servers can be identified by IP address. Some proxy servers change their IP address regularly. Even if you filter out anyone joining with a known proxy IP address, there is still a problem. A small city can be serviced by an Internet provider showing a single IP address. For example, everyone in the Bahamas would show the same IP address if they join UP. Suppose we have five members from the Bahamas. Do we have five unique individuals, or is it just Andy Wight who has registered using five different accounts? (No offense intended, Andy.)

Hmmm.....how do other forums block them?

Any other ways?

Hi Lee,

I really don't think it's all that important at the moment to be worried about. There aren't that many of us here.

Best regards.

Hi Grumple..

Well, even less of us than we originally thought...lol.

It seems worth sorting out to me, if it's even possible.

Peace,
Lee

I agree, especially if someone's banning comes up! maybe members who register using a proxy should be excluded from voting?

Hi andywight,

As I see it, only one person here has access to people's IP's. If information about the IP of anybody is made public it could only have been leaked from one source.

I'm sure that that person wouldn't leak said information as that would be political suicide. ;)

If people wish to make up 'sockpuppet' characters just to vote, they must have a very boring life. Have you seen what the votes are about? Not exactly important.

Best regards.

Why not sort it out while we have small numbers?

Easier to do it now, rather than later, I would think.
