I can see the appeal of this idea, but, just how much energy will be required to run these buildings?
This looks like the Venus Project, and I am very wary of that.
I don't understand man's fascination with trying to improve on nature. People are crammed into cities because most of the land outside of cities has been claimed centuries ago by the robber barons, who's relatives are carrying on with the crime(s) to this day.
Once they are done with, people will have land to move onto and start growing their food with nature and these huge ugly edifices (cities) can be demolished and the roads dug up to allow Mother Nature to breath again.

Energy won't be the problem in the future - it will be abundant. With that in mind, I think it's unlikely we would live in cities. When we could live anywhere 8-)

Vertical farms are a wonderful way of growing food for so many reasons the main one is not intruding into the natural forest to grow food. The localization and the feeding of the soil.

These vertical farms could be run as a co-operative.

Street scaping is another way to growing enough food for everyone.
