In 1974, Dr. Carol Rosin directly experienced psychotronic communication, equivalent to having a phone conversation beamed directly into your head. This was 40 years ago. I read a patent online a few years ago about this very same technology and posted about it on either Avalon or Nexus. Naturally, the technology was being pursued primarily for military applications. If you had mentioned this capability to the general public 40 years ago, they would have called you crazy. That is still the case today. And the technology is still being kept secret.

Many a night I have lain awake pondering this question...

OK, that's just a joke, the reality being I have never pondered this question. I doubt you have either. Nevertheless, science explorers at the University of California at Berkeley have pondered this question in relation to another puzzle:

Biologists have been puzzled by the evolutionary adaptation behind a common tooth trait of northern Asians and Native Americans: shovel-shaped incisors. -- source

If the mundane can be stranger than fiction, then so can the more difficult to imagine. Linda Moulton Howe gives us a fascinating personal account of some of the questions that she ponders while trying to sleep. This off-the-cuff Q&A gives some indication of the depth of her experiences in the "stranger than fiction" category.

Ed Leedskalnin built Coral Castle in Florida single-handedly. People have long wondered how he did it. The mystery is still being unraveled.
