Post May 1st General Strike
I was at my local organic market which is staffed by some really radical people.

One of the woman I know who works in the vitamin section, a single parent with two teenage daughters and a mere slip of a thing, slipped a piece of paper in my hand and whispered to me she's not coming to work on May 1st.

I scribbled this forum's web address on a piece of paper and slipped it to her, telling her I'd do my part to pay it forward because I may not look like a radical but appearances can be deceiving!

If I had a job not to go to on May 1st, I would not go. My child will be delighted.

No nothing day. Take it all out of the system. Should be interesting to say the least.

I've been on strike for years now, so you know I'm on-board.

Isn't May 1st a public holiday? People won't go to work anyway.

May 1st is not a holiday where I live.

Schools, government offices and private sector businesses are closed. Many businesses in the realm are open 364 days per year. Closed only one day: Christmas Day. On that day, Mission Kitchens are still open.

In my fairy tale land Grumplebum, on "public holidays", Hospitals, emergency rooms and clinics are open. Doctors, nurses, technicians, cooks, janitors still go to work on public holidays.

Hourly wage earners, or the working poor as they're known in the realm I live in, those who toil for others working menial jobs in the service industry and hospitality trades such as Resorts, Hotels, Stadiums and the like, they will go to work too.

Supermarkets, Delicatessens, fast food joints, sports arenas, bars pubs and restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, malls, you name it. They are open for business and people do go to work on public holidays if they work in that sector.

Musicians, theater attendants, actors, bartenders, grocery stockers and clerks, chefs, prep cooks, police officers, bus drivers, table bussers, hostesses, janitors, security guards, maids, waiters, waitresses, dishwashers, concierges, emergency workers, fire-fighters, dispatchers, limousine drivers, taxi drivers, Walmart employees and greeters, pharmacists, airline pilots, flight attendants, airport employees, pizza delivery drivers, hosts, baristas, casino dealers and employees and maintenance people. They all go to work on public holidays.

Chime in United People if I have forgotten any people who are obliged to work on holidays where I live.

That magical forest in The Kingdom of Utopia will be so laid back on May 1st, which is a holiday, and where you and your 6 jewel-mining brothers "don't go to work" in the mountain. Snow White though? She will still arise at the crack of dawn, deliver room service, change your sheets, re-make beds and place a chocolate on your pillows, vacuum the rugs, dust, and clean the bathroom.

In the kitchen she will sweep the floor, bake the bread, disinfect work surfaces, cook lunch, serve it, clear the table and do the washing up.

She will go to the market which is open on holidays, come back and prepare for the dinner service. She will wash your clothes in the laundry room, dry them, iron and fold them or hang them and put them away for you. Later on, Snow White will gather wild flowers, set the table, fold napkins, shine the cutlery, cook dinner, clear the table, and do the washing up.

Since it's a holiday, Snow White will draw water from the well, fill the bath barrel, clean your ears and give you a nice hot towel massage while Bashful plays the squeeze harp.

If it's a holiday on May 1st in that magical fairy tale land you live in Grumplebum, where people "won't go to work anyway", if I was Snow White? I would go on General Strike.

Hi A Nony Mouse,

You are correct, those emergency services in Far, Far Away are covered, but those who cover the shifts do get two days off in lieu, or get double time, depending on where they work.

The only people who don't revel in such luxury of course are the self employed.

Look at the photo of Snow White, she looks so happy!

Best regards.

And you too, one of the self-employed, may participate in this General Strike Grumplebum: Stay home. Do nothing. Buy nothing.

It's good to hear you yourself are self-employed, and will be home on holiday doing nothing on May 1st.

People on holiday in my magical land still drive around town and purchase gas and lotto tickets, grab a $5 vente latte at Starbucks, eat out, go to the casino or the ski hill or Disneyland, or the theater or the movies.

They drink and drive and have road accidents on holidays, They even kill people in those vehicles while driving drunk on holidays. Those are the very worst days for emergency workers. Holidays.

People also experience heart attacks or strokes or hurt themselves while pottering around the garden on Holidays, and need to call an ambulance and be attended to quickly by emergency workers.

Or their barbeques blow up and they catch the house or themselves on fire.

Or set themselves ablaze and run through the streets of Chinese markets while onlookers pay them little mind and do nothing to assist.

They take plenty of cell phone pictures though. Even in China everyone but me seems to have a cell phone.

This is one of the least awful pictures people took.

This is one of the very worst ones that an onlooker took.

This is how this Tibetan father of 3 used to look.
