This is terrible to see and a great tell in how our species continues to conquer itself. There is still hope though. This is because changing ones direction can be so easy. All you have to say is I was wrong. Mea culpa? This points back to that social and personal dynamic again. The awareness of the social times we are in! Man is sick and tired of hierarchy! Sick of the manipulation and tired of being treated like a child. Wake up!

And it really could just come down to Ego. Greybeard would be proud. Most people are in a contradictory feedback loop. That is, what they think there doing is not supported by their actions. This is a form of schism and reiterates the yiddish proverb, one hand washes the other and then they both wash the face. This literally comes down to ones awareness of their actions.

The psyche never maturates! It stays in a child like dynamic, contriving itself its a responsible mature adult! I would examine this angle, much like how parasites use their hosts psychologically. Put some super computer use there. This is just a fundamental precept of maturity.

Just to add. This contradictory feedback loop is in an identity form. That is, its in a system. System meaning its organized and evolved. In most cases it has to be challenged! Disrupted to shake the person awake. Part of the defensive system is to make the environment like walking on eggshells. Or Political correctness. Or whatever precept it chooses to try and take Control of that environment. Control issues? My god were in deep doo doo.
