I think it is more accurate to say we are driven by mind control (emotional manipulation) and the pursuit of money (selfish greed). Human weaknesses are being exploited by the ruling sociopaths as they pursue power and control.

That is true, but what part of the root can you remove that the people will unite too? War and debt are more of a common denominator and something our species can hold on to. Emotional intelligence can be an abstract idea.

Neither war nor debt are something normal people pursue of their own volition. They have to be manipulated into pursuing these two horrors. This the the niche sociopaths fill. Obviously, it's a niche we could do very well without. The root of the problem is the sociopath. They are experts at deception (making the horrors seem attractive) and manipulation (making us want to do what's in their best interest, not ours). War and debt are tools of the sociopath. They are not the root problem -- sociopaths are.
